In the history of Chinese and foreign literature, works on orphans piled up one after another. With the coming of the new period, more writers began to focus on the lives of orphans and various orphan characters were portrayed by them. In that period, the orphan image participated in lots of literary trends named as Scar Literature, Introspection Literature, Reform Literature, Root-seeking Literature or Avant-garde Literature in a unique way, which not only occupied a place in the image of the New Period Literature and also became a theme landscape of the literary. However, from the perspective of literature focus, the orphan image is still an unmentioned theme. Research on the orphan problem are currently limited to the study of some single author, works and character, not reaching up to the level of mass care. Therefore, it is possible and meaningful to do the research on the orphan image in the novels of the new period.This dissertation analyzes the deep connotation of why the writers in the new period all choose to create the orphan image and the aesthetic value and social significance of the orphan image. It contains six parts. The introductory part mainly introduces the purpose and meaning on the research of orphan image as well as the current situation and thought of this research. The first chapter is to find the origin of the creation of orphan image and to define the scope of this study and its object through motif research. The second chapter focuses on the three types and general characteristics of the orphan image in the novels of the new period. In the third chapter, the author reveals that the collective creations of orphan image are actually caused by the influence of times, literary trends and the writers' personal experiences. On the basis of the analysis in the third chapter, the author generalizes the aesthetic value and social significance of the creation of the orphan image in the fourth chapter. Finally, the dissertation concludes with a discussion on the shortage of the novels of the new period and places great expectations on the writers'works.
