The Rockefeller Foundation was founded in 1913, which was sponsored by John D. Rockefeller. Under the mission which benefits the people all-over the world, Rockefeller Foundation experiences the process that turns the focus from Nature Society to Social Society, and made great contributions to the healthcare, education, medical treatment, agriculture, literature, environment and other fields for both American people and others in the world. It plays a vital role at home and abroad. After more then a century of history, the Rockefeller Foundation has become the model of modern philanthropy foundations in America by its scientific management system, advanced charitable ideal and the huge capital.The paper discusses the background in which the Rockefeller Foundation is established, the course of its developments, operating characteristics, function and effects. In Part One, the author describes the implication and classification of the modern American philanthropy foundations and illustrating the backgrounds of the modern American philanthropy foundations from three respects, that is, the American economic, environment and cultural in late 19th and early 20th. In Part Two, the author expatiates the courses of John D. Rockefeller's growth and influence to American society, and then introduces the background of Rockefeller Foundation's establishment, and summarizes the course of its development, and analyses the reasons why the focus shifts. In Part Three, the author mainly explores the Rockefeller Foundation's operating characteristics, deliberating its scientific and non-governmental characteristics by its internal operations and its relations with American government. In Part Four, the author mainly analyses the Rockefeller Foundation's function and profound influence over the developments of the United States of America and even world so as to have a comprehensive understanding of the Rockefeller Foundation. The Last Part is the epilogue. The Rockefeller Foundation is important to the development of China's Charity.
