The Role Mismatches And The Predicament-Extrication Under The Bifurcation Of Elegance And Vulgarness

Analyzed from the perspective of social psychology, the formation of the psychological structure of an ethnic group is the result of long-term accumulation. As far as an individual who lives in the sociocultural context is concerned, his psychological consciousness has a close relationship with the sociocultural context which he lives in. Liu Yong is an ordinary intellectual in the Song Dynasty; his cultural personality must have been shaped by his context. Liu Yong is a romantic and outstanding wit. However, there also is a gene of analysis'possessed by the feudal scholars in Liu's personality. Thus, in the context of Song culture, his traditional feelings interacted with his rebellious spirit, which made it impossible for him to getting out of the regular pattern that"an intellectual wit is always calumniated and hated."Starting from analyzing the historical background and cultural context, based on the life experience and works of Liu Yong, this thesis tries to analyses the transitivity of Liu's cultural personality, and it is expected that an accurate understanding can be achieved. The thesis consists of four parts.Part 1 is introduction, which makes a literature review of the researches on Liu, the research results are summed up, the current researches are highlighted, and the related data are collected and analyzed.Part 2 firstly reviews the evolution of the relationship between the elegance and bulginess, then the shift of elegance and bulginess followed the rise of the city culture and entertainment is discussed, and also the impact of vulgar culture on the elegance is analyzed. The collective mind of the intellectual class who confronted the bifurcation of elegance and vulgarness is analyses, and also the conflict between passion and reason is discussed.Part 3 takes the starting point of the duality of the elegance and vulgarness to discuss the struggle between the individuality and the historical culture. On the one hand, Liu is self-willed, and became the spokesman of the vulgar culture; on the other hand, he has a desire for status and glory, and was taken as a tool to face the challenge from the vulgar culture, which eventually leads to mismatch under the bifurcation of elegance and vulgarness. He broke the taboo, which made the intellectual premier.Part 4 is devoted to discuss the predicament in which Liu was trapped after role mismatch, he was exiled in a way and wondered between the elegant and vulgar culture. Then Liu's struggle for getting out the predicament is analyses from the perspectives of a hermit in the brothel , eulogizing the emperor and going to court. Finally, from the dimensions of drifting, lost of ambition and recalling, the thesis tries to explain Liu's confused and alienated feeling and his nostalgia.Part 5 is the concluding remarks which reflect the epochal character, the transformation and the transitivity Liu confronted; and also the whole thesis is summed up.
