Based on the folk songs in Dabieshan area and songs and dances between Yangtz River and River Huan, Lu Opera takes its shape from Duangong Show, Heizi Show and Menge. It is a collective art with a strong sense of rural life, and is written, performed and enjoyed by laborers (or folk artists among laborers), who get inspirations from everyday life. Developed over a long period of time, Lu Opera is the product of the interaction between natural and geographical environment as well as the interaction between society and culture, hence, it embodies people's values, emotions, and aesthetics in the Anhui rural areas.By using case study and from the perpective of Lu Opera culture, this thesis aims to establish the communication and understanding between Lu Opera and other cultures, while at the same time, through an analysis of the music forms, a historical survey, and a virtual description, it also seeks to explore the interaction between Lu Opera and the natural and social enviroment, to discuss its present situation, and to interpret its significance as a regional culture. It has four parts. The first part is a general survey of the development and performance of Lu Opera over a long historical period; the second part is an analysis of its music forms; the third part discussses its present situation, with Yulan Lu Opera troupe as a case study; the last part discusses Lu Opera from the folk music theory and gives a cultural interpretation from three aspects, namely, Lu Opera itself, its transmission and the social change.
