Since the turn of the century, a "new century literature," reflecting the character of the age, has emerged in Chinese literature. The new century literature has been particularly open to accepting literary phenomena outside the literary mainstream. These phenomena naturally include the well known "Children of the '80s Literature." The Children of the '80s movement, a phenomenon particular to modern Chinese literature, consists of works expressing the experiences and inner life of a group of young people who matured around the turn of the century. In recent years, Uyghur literature has developed in step with Chinese literature. Particularly after Liberation, Uyghur literature generally shared a social and political climate with Chinese literature; its literary views and literary phenomena therefore developed along similar lines to Chinese literature as a whole, albeit with important local characteristics. In this paper, I intend to illuminate some of the accomplishments of the Uyghur authors belonging to the same generation as the Han authors who created the Children of the '80s Literature; I will focus in particular on poetry, in which the achievements of these young Uyghur authors have been particularly noteworthy. The paper is divided into four parts:The first section serves as a preface. This section introduces the Chinese Children of the '80s Literature, both the concept itself and its development; and will consider how to implement the concept in the study of Uyghur literature. The second section discusses the emergence of the Uyghur Children of the '80s, the background to their literary maturation, the state of their work in various literary genres, and some of their most accomplished representatives in these genres. The third section consists of the third and fourth chapters. It considers the fact that the most notable contributions of the Uyghur Children of the '80s have been in poetry; outlines some of their major poetic achievements; and analyzes the characteristics of this group as a whole, as well as of some of its individual representatives and their works. The fourth section comprises the fifth chapter, which serves as the paper's conclusion. It summarizes the achievements of the Uyghur Children of the Eighties, their place in Uyghur literature, and some problems remaining in their work.
