These years, as the rapid advancement of globalization, China also speeds up thewheel of entering into the international world in the fields of economy, society as well asculture. Meanwhile, the exchange of education has been an important part of internationalexchange. In order to enhance such exchange and attract overseas students, the Englishintroduction to university which is often regarded as a window to display itself play a keyrole in publicizing university. As a major medium for international publicity, theimpression left by the university introduction to the reader will directly affect the imageand status of university. Hence, it is important to study the linguistic feature and the textconstruction of such English introduction in the way of genre analysis.In the recent thirty years, stylistics, text linguistic and discourse analysis havedeveloped from the superficial description of the language to the deep exploration ofmicro-structure and communicative function, which evolved into the important branch ofgenre analysis. Genre analysis drew many scholars' interests since its appearance.However, few genre analyses on the English introduction to university have been madethough the studies of genre analysis are quite common.This paper makes a comparison between the introduction to university in China andUS based on the established six corpora under the theoretical foundation of genre analysis.197introductions are collected to establish6corpora. Holistic comparison, genericstructure and lexical chunks are three main aspects of the comparison.The whole research is conducted from the perspectives of the occurrence frequencyof move, move sequence pattern, and the lexical feature of each move based on theSwales' move model and Bhatia's model. The research results show that there issignificant difference between the introduction to university in China and US. However,the difference between Arts School and Science School is not significant. On the one hand,there are similarities, such as the move similar occurrence of Move2and Move3, thevariation of move pattern. On the other hand, great differences are also found. Chineseuniversities tend to employ formal and long sentences to reach every aspects of the introduction to university. While American universities tend to employ informal and shortsentences to briefly present the schools' characteristics in well-organized informationwhich the students need. The deep reason of above differences is the cultural differencebetween China and U.S., and the reason for lexical difference is the influence of languagetransfer.
