A Constructional Approach To [Subj+v₁+v₂ing] Passive Construction

In the process of English communication, English passives are used frequently inscience and technology, the government documents, news reports, and so on; the passivestructure has been a heatedly discussed topic of language scholars at home and abroad.A passive construction may involve a verb other than BE combined with a pastparticiple, as in the case of the GET-passive, as well as the '[Subj+v₁+v₂ing] passiveconstruction (V-ING PC)' and the 'V-ABLE passive construction'. Most previous studiesfocus on the study of the first two passive constructions, while the special pattern of the'V-ING PC' is studied rarely at the systematic level, so this paper will adopt ConstructionGrammar as the general theoretical basis to explore the idiosyncrasy of this constructionin deep and in detail.Through the study of literature review, the relevant research methods can be dividedinto five kinds, namely traditional grammar view, structural view, generative view,functional view and cognitive view, this linguistic schools only focus on some aspect ofEnglish passives and have much limitations. Eventually, Construction Grammar as thenew theory is recommended to make the study on the V-ING PC.This study has some theoretical and practical value. Construction Grammar isapplied to analyzing the semantic constraint of V-ING PC, which can provide a thoroughanalysis about this construction and make us have a better understanding about thispassive construction. The study, from a flesh perspective-Construction Grammar, is aproof of the feasibility of using Construction Grammar to study English and Chinesesentences, especially the special English patterns; at the same time, this study is helpfulfor foreign language teaching and second language acquisition. This study will make ushave a more comprehensive understanding of the English passive structure.
