Research Of Public Art And Architecture Combination In The Contemporary Beijing

With the development of the social-economic and the enhancement of the people's aestheticlevel, public art is having the characteristics of multiplex development patterns in thecontemporary Chinese urban area. The multiplex development patterns provide moredevelopment space for theories and practices of public art. As a special kind of public art,architecture is one of the most important types of the contemporary public art. Architectures canshow their artistic qualities by their structure, material, color, and so on. After a long time ofpractices and developments, architecture art has achieved outstanding achievements inarchitecture envelopes, space creation, and element organization. And architecture art willprovide new opportunities for the development of public art.Firstly, this paper tries to investigate the possibility to see architecture art as one type ofpubic arts based on the exploration of the concept and the development process of public art. Andthe diversified functions of architecture classes and the development process of architecture aresummarized. The developments of architecture and public art are compared. Their relationshipsalso are analyzed in order to find the cross point between the two research train of thoughts.Based on the description of the combination of public art and architecture, Beijing has been seenas the research object. Ten Architectures in four periods of Beijing history are compared andanalyzed. The development reasons and types of the combination of public art and architectureare researched. The architectural form and morphological constitution of the public art andarchitecture combination are analyzed and summarized. The possibility of public art and urbanarchitecture environment combination is inquired in the view of architectural forms. And also, weanalyze how the architecture, especially the architectural surface and the space shape express themeaning of public art.With the further studies to the public art and architecture combination and with the NationalStadium, the National Aquatics Centre, the National Centre for the Performing Arts, the ChineseTelevision building in Peking and the new Building of Beijing Planetarium as cases study, thispaper tries to explore the connotation and denotation and the far-reaching influence of the publicart and architecture combination. Finally, the existence value of the public art and architecturecombination and the development trends of public art are given to tap new developmentpossibilities for public art.
