Liang Kai,an artist in the time of Sonthern Song Dynasty, is an important figure in the history of Chinese painting. His painting ideas, techniques and works have great artistic value. Many researchers have been exploring him and they have gotten certain achievements, which enriched people's awareness and understanding of Liang Kai from different perspectives and fields, but also triggered some problems worthy of thinking.That is, how to make in-depth research and scientific proof to avoid meaningless duplication of research, how to further tap into the potential resources of Liang Kai's freehand brushwork figure paintings in order to make a correct understanding of the value and significance of Liang Kai's painting and personality in the history of Chinese painting, which serves as a link between past and future. The purpose also includes exploring the Two-way interaction of Liang Kai's personality and his literary thought. Thus, this paper tried to contemplate again Liang Kai's painting with the starting point of his artistic achievements and personality embodied in order to a get a more comprehensive and profound understanding of Liang Kai. This paper is divided into four parts.PartⅠ: Make a reflection on the current research of Liang Kai, which is based on the comprehensive pectination and analysis of Liang Kai's life, his painting style and the study of his works.PartⅡ: Go deep into the artistic achievement of Liang Kai's freehand brushwork figure paintings through exploring the development of painting and image, and probing into the historical evolution of freehand brushwork figure paintings. It also points out that it is the interaction between the earlier days'accumulation and later peroid's breakthrough that really creates Liang Kai's final art development and innovation. Afterwards, it makes an analysis of the features of Liang Kai's freehand figure paintings and the characteristics of blending calligraphy with wash painting figures.PartⅢ: The reason why Liang Kai's freehand brushwork figure paintings have great artistic value and achievements, to a certain extent, is that Liang Kai and his freehand brushwork figure paintings have embodied the personality spirit which is admired by the descendants. Specifically, it includes the unique personality of seeking truth as pleasure, the temperament of being detached and open-minded, and the artistic thinking of promoting noble character and artistic freedom and opposing the fetters as well.PartⅣThe freehand brushwork figure paintings of Liang Kai not only show the uniqueness of Liang Kai in the history of Chinses painting, but also further clarify the modern value it has. That is, firstly, emphasis on life experience and giving the rein to artistic imagination should be combined. Secondly,forging noble personality should be integrated with the correct value of the position. Thirdly, we should keep to the multiple principle of developing simultaneously, combining painting with image, paying attention to creative practice. All these give us a profound inspiration to our current research of paintings and creation.
