Kurt Vonnegu(t1922-2007)is a distinguished novelist in contemporary American literature. His works include novels, short stories and dramas. Some of his novels have become the classics of contemporary American literature and Vonnegut has become an idol of the youth. His highest achievement, Slaughterhouse Five, is universally acknowledged as a classic work of postmodernism. It seems to be a comedy, but, actually, it contains tragic contents and makes you want to laugh but unable to do so when facing disaster, absurdity and despair. That is"black humor", which characterizes Vonnegut's novels. This thesis first gives a systematic and all-around analysis of Billy, including his image, personality, fate, and his relationship with other characters. Then it focuses on a thorough analysis of the purpose of the depiction of Billy as an anti-hero.
