The Rediscussion Of Sino-Japanese Provisions Of Cordial Relation

Sino-Japanese Provisions of Cordial Relation which was signed in 1871, is the first provision between the two countries. Signing the provision means the beginning of treaty diplomacy between the two in modern times.In the later part of the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi suppressed Korea, but failed in the end. The failure of the suppression did not drive away the hope of conquering Korea. In Edo Period, Tokugawa shogunate organized Japanese Huayi Order——the diplomatic system of Shogunate. At the same time, with the influence of exertion of western forces on eastern countries,the Ming replaced by the Qing,the Japanese Huayi Consciousness was formed within the order. The main content which was constructed by knowledegable people in Edo period appeared as the successor of the policy of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's expansion policy against Korea, with the aim to built Japanese Huayi Order which was against China. After the Meiji Reformation of Japan, the new government stepped on the way to build modern times country. The policy towards Asian countries followed Edo Period's the Japanese Huayi Consciousness which was firstly presented as the form of the policies towards Korea. After the failure of recovering the diplomatic communication between Japan and Korea, Japanese government pointed out signing Sino-Japanese Provisions of Cordial Relation with Qing government. At first, Japanese government applied the regulation of modern western treaty system, so as to improve their position to equal to Qing government, then solved the Korea problem within the traditional Huayi Order. Although Meiji government met the initial aim of signing the treaty, the content of it leaded to the discontent and arguing within the government. After that the Japan government wanted to amend the treaty which was rejected by the Qing government. In the end, in order to solve the problems of Taiwan, Liuqiu and Korea, Japanese government exchange the treaty with Qing government in 1873. The signing of Sino-Japanese Provisions of Cordial Relation symbolized the beginning of the modern times treaty diplomacy. At the same time the treaty is the first attempt of resolving diplomatic problem by applying modern times western treaty system by Japanese government.This thesis basing on previous researches, starting from the point of History, collects and analyzes Meiji government's consciousness to the foreign countries which was succeeded from Edo period, expresses the aims and process of signing Sino-Japanese Provisions of Cordial Relation between China and Japan, analyzes the way that how Japanese government solve the international affairs through the regulation of modern times western treaty diplomacy and how Japan stepped on the road of the modern times western treaty diplomacy.
