Among The Third Generation of Postwar Writers in Japanese literature, Shusaku Endo is a comparatively special one. His literature career began at publishing critical articles. In 1955, the work The White Race published in Modern Literature won The Akutagawa Prize. After that Shusaku Endo established his status as a writer. Besides novels, he still created a number of prose and essays. As a writer, Shusaku Endo is very rich in writing types. As a catholic, Shusaku Endo spent his life time discussing the relationship between catholic theology and literature. Besides that, the conflict between pantheism in Japanese traditional culture and monotheism in western Christian Faith is one of the important issues in his literary works. Actually, there are some writers dealing with Christian Faith in Japanese literature. But only Shusaku Endo can write from the perspective of Christian and can be accepted by a large number of readers in America and Britain.Shusaku Endo won lots of awards. In 1955, The White Race won The Akutagawa Prize. In 1966, Slience won The Tanizaki Prize. But the study about such a famous writer is not enough in Chinese literary circle. Besides several brief introductions, there are only two doctoral dissertations.Based on others'study results, this thesis re-understands his works and analyzes the priest image in two works by using character analysis method in literary theory. The author studied Japanese modern historical researches and literary works related to the issue of this thesis, analyzed character images, words, deeds and psychology, and summarized the conflict and integration of western Christian culture and Japanese culture in those characters.
