This research aims to approach conversational implicature (CI) from a contextual perspective. Specifically, it analyzes how the mechanism of understanding conversational implicature is arrived at by dint of an array of examples that are selected from daily conversations, films, literary works from a contextual perspective. This paper reviews the related studies on conversational implicature. It ranges from Grice's cooperative principle to Sperber and Wilson's relevance theory. Both of these two main communicative principles have ignored or failed to pay due attention tospecific contexts in which the understanding of conversational implicature occurs. This paper tries to overcome the deficiency by highlighting the contextual perspective. The relation between conversational implicature and context is discussed in detail. Only when context exists can words have meanings, for conversation takes place in a social environment and the communicators are the main roles in conversation. Besides, communicators'instant response is directly related to the situaltional setting of conversation. Therefore, based on the foreign and demestic studies on context, this research absorbs their strengths and classifies context into three aspects: background context, cognition context and setting context. Meanwhile, it focuses on approaching conversational implicatures generated from flouting maxims of CP from a contextual perspective. From the above analyes, communicative interlocutors can achieve their communicative intention in context.
