A Study On The English Translation Of Li Bai's Poetry From The Perspectives Of Semantic Translation And Communicative Translation

Tang poetry is the essence of Chinese classical literature, which contains a rich cultural heritage, and symbolizes Chinese ancient civilization .Tang culture nurtures countless outstanding poets, and Li Bai is regarded as one of the celebrated poets of the Tang Dynasty .To some extent , the study of Li Bai's poems is considered as the microcosm of Tang poetry. Being remarkable and fantastic in imagination ,bold and unrestrained in style ,his poetry is regarded as one of the most important classic literature both at home an abroad ,so many men of letters go in for dealing with a study of the translations of Li Bai's poetry. All of these days, Li Bai's poetry has been translated all sorts of language, which makes more and more people appreciate unique poetic aesthetics of Chinese ancient poetry and familiarize with Chinese culture.As we know, there are big differences between Chinese ancientpoetry and English poetry, especially, in terms of beauty sense,sound sense and form sense. Therefore, Whether Tang poetry is translatable or not has been a controversial topic. In the process of English translation of Li Bai's poetry, due to different cultural background and aesthetic understanding between authors of source language and target language ,and obstacles to the exchange of poetic image and rhythm from source language to target language ,English translation of Li Bai's poetry turns to be a demanding work.However, because of permeability of cultures, isomorphism and correspondence between semantic systems in source language and target language ,Li Bai's poems translated into English is practicable. In this thesis, the author mainly studies English versions how to reproduce the essence of Li Bai's poetry in terms of beauty sense ,beauty sound and beauty form. The author applies Peter Newmark's theory"semantic translation"and"communicative translation"as the basis of his study . By analyzing the roles of translators in communicative translation, the author makes a study of different English translations of Li Bai's poetry by different men of letters, both at home and abroadFinally, the author makes a comparative study on translations of Jing Ye Shi by different famous translators based on semantic translation and communicative translation in terms of beauty sense ,beauty sound and beauty form. By comparing and analyzing different English translations of Li Bai's poetry worked by some famous translators, the thesis draws a conclusion that the appropriate combination of the semantic translation and communicative translation is perhaps the best way during the course of English translation of Li Bai's poetry...
