Under the guidance of Newmark's theory concerning semantic translation and communicative translation, the author has translated the book “Introduction to Philosophy of Language” by the Japanese scholar,Hattori Hiromiyuki. In addition to introducing Newmark's translation theory, this translation report mainly summarizes the targeted translation methods for philosophical texts from various perspectives including translations of terms and proper nouns, long sentences and textual cohesion, combined with analysis on translation practices. For term translations, the author proposes that on the basis of term identification, methods such as traceability and transliteration combination can be adopted to complete the work.Besides, the translation of proper nouns can employ the general translation method or flexibly choose the appropriate method depending on different situations. To translate long sentences, the author divides them in the texts into three categories, namely “long sentence with complex modifier”,“long sentence with inserted element” and “long sentence with complex relationship between sentence sections”,so as to explore the specific translation method respectively. In terms of cohesive texts,an emphasis is placed on the discussion about the instructive cohesion, believing that appropriate methods of supplement, omission and literal translation should be carefully selected according to the specific situation when translating such texts.
