Vocabulary is an essential building block of language and it is now recognized as an important aspect of foreign language learning. The use of rich vocabulary is one of the obvious characteristics of high-quality spoken production. However, empirical studies on the relationship of lexical diversity to the quality of oral production have been rare both at home and abroad so far. This thesis examines type-token ration (TTR) which can be used to evaluate lexical diversity and measures the relationship of lexical diversity to the quality of oral production by analyzing 31 second-year postgraduates of non-English majors'speech tests. In this study, it is found that lexical diversity to some extent influences the quality of oral production by EFL learners. Furthermore, lexical diversity is positively related to the quality of oral production by EFL learners. The findings of the present study will provide insights into the improvement of EFL learners'spoken English and vocabulary teaching and learning.
