On Appreciation And Translation Of Humor In Joe Wong's Stand-Up Comedy

Stand-up comedy, as the carrier of laughter and culture, is becoming more and more popular among Chinese audiences. Increasing translators and English learners pay attention to the translation of humor as well. Revolving around Joe Wong's stand-up comedy, this thesis discusses humor and its definition, and then analyzes Joe Wong's distinctive style and probes into the translatability of humor and its translation strategies.The author believes linguistic humor is translatable according to Nida's functional equivalence theory and Huang Zhonglian's translation variation theory. Humor that shares similar linguistic and cultural features can be translated in light of literal translation. Through proper adaptation, the translated text can achieve the humorous effect similar to the original text. Concerning the translation of cultural humor, domestication and foreignization with annotation as well as adding are adopted for the purpose of conveying complete cultural information. In this way the audiences are amused by humor and meanwhile acquire the cross-cultural information.
