Translation And Introduction Of Humor In "The Art Of Life"

As a special form of expression,humor is the essence of human culture.It reflects humans' world outlooks on life and values emotionally and penetrates every aspect of humans' life,which can be seen as an indispensable part of human society.Besides,humor can not only keep a literary work enduring and immortal,but also enable readers to love reading deeply.And The Importance of Living written by humorist Lin Yutang is just an integration of all kinds of humorous elements,which leaves readers a lingering aftertaste.In recent years,most domestic scholars have studied humorous language and humorous thoughts from Lin's essays.But few people search for the related humor from his English writings systematically.Therefore,on the basis of previous researches,this thesis mainly pays attention to the translation of humor in The Importance of Living.This thesis can be divided into the following six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction to Lin Yutang and The Importance of Living.And it also illustrates the research value and research methods of the thesis.The second chapter is literature review about origin,evolvement,different viewpoints and classifications of humor.The third chapter begins to discuss the classifications of humor in The Importance of Living,including linguistic humor,cultural humor and language humor relating to cultural elements,namely comprehensive humor.At the same time,it gives abundant examples to analyse humor as well.Similarly,combining with a large number of examples,the fourth chapter mainly focuses on the special translation approaches that Lin has used in the process of disseminating Chinese humor,such as,adapted translation,stupid translation,sentence translation and philosophical translation.The purpose of it is to seek new translation approaches of humor translation.The fifth chapter surveys the dissemination of humor in the book from the readers of foreign websites.Besides,it also analyses several factors that influence the dissemination of humor,including cultural differences,the occupation and educated level of the readers and the readers' sensitivity to humor.The last chapter is the conclusion that generalizes the content,major findings and limitations of this thesis,which arouses readers' resonance.
