Zhang Yuan (1648-1722) was born in Houguan, Fujian province in the early Qing Dynasty. He was an outstanding poet. He won the first place in the provincial examination in the 38th year of the reign of Emperor Kang Xi of the Qing Dynasty, was appointed as the Sheriff of Lufeng, Yunnan province in his late years and died when he was still in charge of this official position. He is best known for his famous work "Poems Composed in WuMenTang" which is charactered by its traditional forms with profound meanings, its lyric lines with passionate expression, its rhyming scheme with smooth arrangement and its fresh impression with natural images. In the early Qing Dynasty, the emergence of Zhang Yuan, together with that of Li Shihong in Minxi and Ding Wei in Minnan, signified the end of the poetic style of the shool of Min which had prevailed for almost 300 years in the Ming Dynasty. However, the academic community hasn't paid attention to Poet Zhang Yuan and his poems yet, let alone done research on the artistic value of his poems. With truthful proofs and textual analysis, this paper, taking the work "Poems Composed in WuMenTang" as the object of research, systematically summarizes the life experience, the acquaintances and poetic creativity of Zhang Yuan, subtly classifies the contents of his poems and reveals the aesthetic significance and artistic value of them. The paper tries to present the original pictures of Poet Zhang Yuan and his poems in a relatively exact way under the particularly historical background of the early Qing Dynasty, and at the same time, truthfully evaluate his position and influence in the development of local literature in Fujian in the early Qing Dynasty.
