After attaining buddhahood, Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, preached the dharma to help sentient beings to detach from vexation for the purpose of achieving buddhahood. According to primitive Buddhism, for a layman to enter the path of the sages, he must observe four rules, i.e. association with good people (sappurisa-samseva), hearing the true Dhamma, thorough attention (yoniso manasikara), practice of the Dhamma in its entirety (dhammanudhamma-patipattj). These four rules are called "Four factors of Stream-Attainment (sotapattiyangani)"."Four factors of Stream-Attainment" is the method to enter the path of the sages. It is a key element to attain pure sacred wisdom eye and four indispensable meritorious collections for benefiting all sentient beings as well. Moreover, by practicing "Four factors of Stream-Attainment" one will truly understand the nature of the five aggregates, the twelve limbs of dependent origination and etc.The teaching of "Four factors of Stream-Attainment" still have significant value in Primitive, Schismatic, Mahayana as well as modern Buddhism, and therefore is a topic worth researching on.
