Whenever the famous name:He Luting is mentioned, people cannot help thinking about Chinese modern music. He was a great representative Chinese national muscian. He had made important contributions to China's early piano art development. He had no equal in his time among the famous musicians, educationists, theorists and activists in China in the twentieth century. He dedicated himself to our country's musical cause and musical education and made great contributions to Chinese modern musical and cultural causes. At the beginning of Chinese piano music development, he learned from western musical theories and technics and combined them with Chinese musical culture, creating musical works with both western effects and strong national styles. His creations opened up the gate of Chinese piano music. His musical works were full of energy, had typical time symbols and distinguishing national styles. He composed a great deal of musical pieces and wrote many articals on musical theories, providing valuable materials for Chinese modern music.In 1930s,the success of the piano tune<The Buffalo Boy's Bamboo Flute> confirmed his musical talents and made a foundation for Chinese earlier piano music creation. His unique ways in piano music creation had active effects on the following Chinese musicians and pushed forward the development of Chinese modern piano music. As an outstanding musician, he had a special favour for Chinese national music. His musical works no matter what styles they were had rich national tastes and so were his five piano works which had become the classical pieces of Chinese piano works and attracted me to study intensively and dig into them.This article is divided into four parts. Part one elaborates He Luting's position in Chinese modern musical history,including the development of Chinese modern music and his roles played in it. Part two classifies his musical works by way of reviewing his musical experience and expounds the backgrounds and elements used in the creation. Part three analyses and studies the five piano works (<<The Buffalo Boy's Bamboo Flute>>,<<The Cradle-Song, <<The Yearning>>, <<The Party>>,<<A Short Tune>>) based respectively on their tunes, materials, themes, and performing skills, pointing out some common features of the five piano works. Part four elaborates He Luting's artistic characteristics in music creation, which may be helpful for the future research on his earlier music works.
