Jiang Zhaohe was China's proud in the 20th century and a great master of Chinese ink painting, moreover, he was also a great realism artist who posessed humanistic concerns. In the beginning of 20th century in China, with feudal dynasty falling apart and society in earthshaking changes, culture and art were also brought into profound seismic. Under the baptisim of the May 4th Movement, realistic creative description of Chinese Fine Arts had become the choice of the time which was along with the two thoughts: Scientific and Demoncracy. Because of the influence of his own sufferings and objective realistic social environment, Jiang Zhaohe deeply realized the relation between Realism and Chinese reality, thus in the grand tide of the Fine Arts Revolution he firmly chose Realism painting combined Chinese and western.Jiang Zhaohe's life is full of frustration, he takes the family tasks for himself when he is young. He manages to make his living on jobs relative to art when he first arriving in Shang Hai. He is always hungry and roams about on the street. Whereas, Jiang Zhaohe does not give up his ideal of painting, he persists on studying western art such as sketch,oil painting and sculpture and so on. At that time in Shanghai, people had no home to live, no clothes to wear and no food to eat, which made Jiang Zhaohe, who was also in underclass, feel the crulty of real society. Later he got to know Xu Beihong who illustrated in detail the basic thoughts of reforming Chinese paintings of himself and the western realism, and also gave Jiang affirmation and encouragement. Just because of Xu's guide and his own experiences, Jiang Zhaohe gave up oil painting determinedly and started the creation of realistic Chinese ink painting.Jiang chose the realism and sticked to that to the end of his life. Especially before liberation, his painting works, no matter under the theme of human sufferings or wars and peace, embodied intensively the critically realistic spirit. They faced our life and society, reflected real time features and people's misery life fully which was the combination of Chinese, this is a further spiritual combination of Chinese and Western art, is a expression of deep tragic consciousness as well.. After the victory of Anti-Japanese War, People's Republic China was declared, thus the haze over Chinese territory finally dropped away and was filled up with peace and joy. Under that trend, Jiang Zhaohe, as a people's artist with social sense of mission and sense of responsibility, transferred his realistic ink painting with times, from critical realism to positive sing of socialist realism. He had created the wide array of realistic paintings which had the features of new time and reflected the people's fine and happy life.As the one of the leading artists of 20th century Chinese ink painting, Jiang Zhaohe's realistic painting works established his position in the century's Chinese art history and also his realistic painting spirit influenced the ink painting artist in the whole time and encouraged and promoted the unprecedented prosperity of Chinese realistic ink paintings. In the new time of all kinds of culture and art unparalleled developing and sharply conflicting, re-study his realism painting spirits has a positive and great effect on reinforcing the importance of realism in Chinese painting, and also has revolutionary meanings in revivaling realisric traditions of Chinese fine arts.
