Feminist Perspective "grace" Theme Interpret

Toni Morrison is one of the greatest African American female writers in contemporary America. A Mercy is her latest novel published in 2008, which shows the miserable experience of the different racial females in the early colonial period of North America. From the feminist perspective, the thesis aims at understanding the themes in the novel with the approach of close reading—loss of women's subject status, double slavery and great maternal love. Based on the female experience of being traded and renamed, the first chapter illustrates the loss of the subject status of the white bride Rebekka, the black girl Florens, the Indian woman Lina and Sorrow, the mulatto girl. The second chapter demonstrates the double slavery from which Florence, her mother and other females suffered mentally and physically. The third chapter makes an analysis of the two different kinds of love Florence received from her mother and Lina. And the fouth chapter reveals Morrison's way to women's liberation—empowering oneself, enduring the differences to unite each other and showing mercy to create equality and harmony between males and females. And the conclusion indicates Morrison's feminism which features with transcending race and removing from the center.
