Arnold Schoenberg, an Austrian composer in 20th Century, is among the major landmarks of 20th century musical thought. Although influenced by Romantic style of music, Schoenberg's early works in tonality stands out its own characteristics laying the foundation for the expressionist music.String trio 6 Verkl?rte Nacht, is one of his early masterpieces in tonality which is the most influential one among other works. It is composed according to the homonymous poetry by Richard Dehmel. This thesis aims at studying and analyzing Schoenberg's Verkl?rte Nacht upon Richard Dehmel's poetry. The music of Verkl?rte Nacht has wonderful melody and lyric but is very complicated and skilled in the rhythm, harmony and musical form which is hard to appreciate. Some fuzzy pieces of this composition foreshow the coming of the second period of his composition typified by the abandonment of key centers, a move often described as atonality.This thesis firstly makes an analysis on transcriptions and method of composition including harmony and musical form; secondly, it talks about humanistic, philosophic, aesthetic and psychological idea reflected by Verkl?rte Nacht. Through the analysis of Arnold Schoenberg's Verkl?rte Nacht, it must be useful in analyzing both Schoenberg's and other contemporary composers'works.
