The Turn of the Screw is a novella (short novel) written by Henry James. Originally published in 1898, it is ostensibly a ghost story. Due to its ambiguous content, it became a favorite text of academics. The novella has had differing interpretations, often mutually exclusive. Many critics have tried to determine the exact nature of the evil hinted at by the story. Good novels, to James, show life in action and are, most importantly, interesting. The concept of a good or bad novel is judged solely upon whether the author is good or bad. His imaginative use of point of view, interior monologue and possibly unreliable narrators in his own novels and tales brought a new depth and interest to narrative fiction. This thesis will discuss the narrative features of the novella focus of the novella based on computer technology, analyze window theory applied to novel by Henry James. This thesis falls into three parts. The first part expounds time window narrative arrangement in The Turn of the Screw, the author designed a main window, suspending before audience. Story-telling needs to move windows into story-line, for example, after saying role A, pull back the needle in the clock, retell role B in the same occasion. Surly you can say role A and B in the same occasion, say A and C or C and B in another occasion. So we distinct two different type of windows;moving windows and static windows. Moving windows refers to focus on roles and move with changing of its time and space. The second part expounds the physically existing environment in which characters live and move. We may call it"setting,"but this intuitive notion of setting needs to be further refined: just as, in the theater, we can distinguish the stage on which events are shown from the broader world alluded to by the characters, in written narrative we can distinguish the individual locations in which narratively significant events take place from the total space implied by these events. The third part analyzes connections between"space window"and"time window", understands the author's narrative strategy in discourse, know how to solve the simultaneous plots, to change story's time and space, to determine occasions for characters'fates in changing. All in all, James shows his"possible world"narrative strategy in his novels. Making audience know different impressions through his narrative windows.
