The paper starts from a basic proposition of "narrative as rhetoric", grasps the essential features of "narrative as rhetoric", probes into how "narrative" can be as "rhetoric" in the field of vision of "narratologies".It consists of five parts. The part of introduction introduces the developing situation of narratology at present Firstly illustrates the developing background of narratoiogy of "narrative as rhetoric", thinks that "narrative as rhetoric" is the inevitable result from "narratology" to "narratologies" and that the development of Wayne C Booth to James Phelan is really the result from the rhetoric of fiction to the rhetoric of narrative. James Phelan had enlarged the researching range of Wayne C Booth, and it just embodies the developing trend from "narratology" to "narratologies".The first chapter is on the relationship between narrative and rhetoric, and includes three parts mainly: the first traces to the source of rhetoric; the second is on the essence of narrative; the third is on the relationship between narrative and rhetoric separately from the diachronic angle. When it is on the relationship between narrative and rhetoric, the paper grasps the essential characteristics of narrative as rhetoric attentively, compares the characteristics at the aspect of recipient of both. Under the influence of receptive aesthetics, the development of narrative more pays close attention to the construction and understanding of narrative text of readers, while rhetoric more pays close attention to the persuasive and influent function of recipient of discourse, so both get the common understanding to this point. The purpose on the relationship between narrative and fiction lies on looking for the support of fictitious text to "narrative as rhetoric".The second chapter is on "narrative as rhetoric" involving of basic literary categories, which constitute the core of the paper. On the base of which explores the linguistic background to look for the linguistic support of "narrative as rhetoric", the paper thinks that the essence of "narrative as rhetoric" actually is the application ofnarrative skills, and forms the rhetoric relationship among author, narrator, characters and readers, so has unique effects of reading text. From this angle, "narrative as rhetoric" actually is the mutuality between writing and reading, meanwhile involves valuable option of author and reader and ideological option of rhetoric itself. During this procession, author is the addresser and implementer of concrete information, whose applying ways are all kinds of narrative skills, whose object is narrative text, whose target is literary effect of narrative text.
