As an ancient yet emerging concept, ideology is lurking in the various kinds of discourse. However, due to the subtlety and ambiguity, the notion of ideology has been perceived as an invisible and fuzzy concept without a rational interpretation. Hence, the thesis attempts to position ideology in the news discourse equipped with the empirical approach, aiming to unfold the implying ideological meaning and its manipulative power. Furthermore, the thesis endeavors to shed a new light on the news discourse translation along with flexible strategies and analysis of motive for each choice of translating. In effect, the discourse per se is the representation of ideology. Ideology is a kind of frame, blueprinting the discourse production and narrative structure, while the word diction, syntax, rhetorical finessing serve as the fabrics for the narrative discourse as whole. In essence, news is the representation discourse of reality, framed by the dominant ideology. Based on the traditional framework of discourse analysis, the thesis emphasizes the characteristics of narrative structure of news discourse. Besides, it holds the narrative term "focalization" as the pillar, leveraging the narrative perspective and the ideological construction, further exposing the manipulative power. The thesis holds that news translation is not simply a process of encoding-decoding. Rather, news translators, as the second narrator, contrive to launch their own ideological mechanism to rewrite the information as a journalist in compliance with the dominant ideology of target audience, including adaptation, interpreting, amplification and omission, in order to steer the public opinion. The significance of the thesis lies on three levels. Firstly, it is an initial attempt to analyze the news translation from the perspective of narratology along with the discussion of narrative structure. Secondly, it expands the interface between discourse production and audience's comprehension, consolidating the theoretical framework of discourse analysis. Thirdly, the thesis shed a new light on the process of news translation and the role of news translator. Rather than a simply voice transmitter, the news translator tries to insinuate himself or herself into the mediating position, exercising a positive manipulative power on narrative discourse.
