| Titles are located at the very beginning of academic articles, which function as the first impression of the research focus of an article for the readers. Appropriateness of a title can determine whether the readers continue with the content of the article. Therefore, great importance should be attached to the composition of titles. Though titles in English of science and technology share some characteristics with those in other articles, they possess specific features of their own, especially those from the phraseological perspective.The research in this thesis is based on the title sub-corpus of Donghua Textile Academic Articles Corpus (DTAAC). With the help of WordSmith, the research concentrates on the phraseological sequences of high frequency from three-word clusters to five-word clusters. The lexico-grammatical characteristics of these sequences are examined and the functional features are further explored. The thesis is a combination of quantitative study and qualitative study.The two kinds of compound titles in this corpus, that is, with colons or with dashes, are analyzed respectively in this paper. Two patterns of phraseologies show prominence in the title corpus. They are noun phraseologies, for example, a study of, and prepositional phraseologies, for example, as a function of. It was found that there is a considerable overlap of constituents between noun phraseologies and prepositional phraseologies. Therefore, titles in this corpus seem to result from the permutation and combination of various noun phraseologies and prepositional phraseologies, which generate all kinds of meanings by their diverse forms. The main function of the phraseologies in the titles is to indicate the research focus in the academic article. Through the combination of various phraseological types in the titles, the different aspects of the academic articles and their relationships are revealed to the readers. |
