The thesis collects the images of esquires on stone reliefs of Han Dynasty and conducts a primary research on the images of esquires using the concept of "paradigm", aiming to discover the ideology of Confucianism in Han Dynasty, the esquires'moral fashions and their effect. It consists of several parts as follows:The introduction includes a review of the researches on stone reliefs and the esquires in Han Dynasty, research methods and the train of thought.Chapter1discusses the effect literature and Confucianism have on esquires'moral fashions in Han Dynasty.Chapter2summaries and identifies the images of esquires in Han Dynasty.Chapter3explores the esquires'moral fashion reflected on stone reliefs.Chapter4discusses the spatio-temporal location of the stone reliefs with images of esquires on them and their function in graves. The conclusion explores how the esquires'moral fashions in Han Dynasty affect the spirit of Chinese. The thesis points out that the images of the esquires on stone reliefs of Han Dynasty can be basically sorted into three kinds:Those who actively participate in the society and care much of common people, those who stick to their commitments and can die for friends who understand them, and esquires who are smart and strive for their careers. The words by Mencius "Esquires have no perpetual estates but perpetual spiritual pursuit." indicate that esquires have stable and clinging spiritual aims and they would try their best to achieve them in spite of the difficulties. The stone reliefs of Han Dynasty reflect how the society of the time shapes the ideal character of the esquires and record the great era of the day through the images of esquires. The esquires'moral fashions such as advocations of bravery, loyalty and respect for teachers and knowledge have great influence on social development. They also contribute to the formation of ethos, and have become an important part of the ethno-psychology of Chinese nation.
