Proverb is the crystallization of human experience and the flash of human's wisdom in the daily life. By lots of English proverbs, not only can we learn the history, culture, society of English-speaking countries, but also we can look for wisdom and inspiration. Meanwhile, by leaning proverb, we can enrich our English vocabulary, master the English mode of thinking and improve own level of learningWith its simple sentence patterns and profound meaning, proverb contains much abundant cultural connotation. Because the thought, theme and background of English proverb are far beyond their understanding, Chinese students will encounter difficulties in the process of learning English proverbs. Therefore, in company with case survey, we study related questions looking forward to receive some valuable conclusions.This paper contains four chapters:chapter one introduces the features of English proverbs and the main feather we discuss about it is on its cultural connotation. The study of English proverb in our country is mainly on its language feature, culture and translation and few studies have explored the application of the cultural strategy to teaching English. Trough use of combining description and explanation, analyzing by comparison, survey analysis, we try to explore a way to combine teaching proverb and teaching English. In chapter two, from the analysis of questionnaire, we discover some major problems in proverb learning, like Interpreting without real understanding, copies mechanically and ignoring individual grammar, is due to lacking of consideration of cultural factors. In chapter three, Through analysis of cultural differences between the East and the West, we give a detailed description about how this disparity influence proverbs and we hope by learning this students can strengthen their cultural consciousness. Chapter four introduces the application of the cultural strategy to teaching English. From the existing problems in traditional culture teaching, we realize the importance of the application of the cultural strategy to teaching English, and then we put forward five teaching methods to combining culture teaching and proverb teaching. By analyzing these four chapters above, we conclude that in the process of learning English proverbs, the key point is the combination of the linguistic teaching and culture teaching. Only in this way, students can enhance the understanding of English and American Literature and their proverbs.
