Hei Nu Yu Tian Lu was the earliest version of Uncle Tom's Cabin in China and was also one of the most famous novel translation works of Lin Shu's.In1980s, the study about Lin Shu was very fierce, among which the most was the analysis of Lin Shu's novel translation works. Recent years, China translation field introduces foreign theory works and views and gains progress in translation theory. And therefore it's necessary to analyze Lin Shu, especially his Uncle Tom's Cabin. Lin Shu adopts many methods during his translation, and deletion is one of the main methods, which is also the criticized focus.Andre Lefevere theorized translation as a form of rewriting produced and read with a set of ideological and political constraints within the target language cultural system.Translation is, of course, a rewriting of an original text. All rewritings, whatever their intention, reflect a certain ideology and a poetics and as such manipulate literature to function in a given society in a given way. Patronage is usually more interested in the ideology of literature than in its poetics, and it could be said that the patron "delegates authority" to the professional where poetics is concerned.The thesis is to analyze the deletion in Uncle Tom's Cabin with the three key elements of rewriting theory and seven kinds of examples on deletion of nicknames, content of religion, female descriptions and comments, chapter titles, author's comments, descriptions about people (appearance and mentality) and scene. This paper concludes with a discussion of effects of the deletion, negative and positive.
