The "Rhapsody" genre firstly emerged in the classical period of the18th century. In the mid-18thcentury, western music began to gradually shift from the Baroque period to the Classical period. Thisalternation accounts for a major change in the development of piano art history. The change started with theaesthetic taste, happening from the change of instruments to the innovation in the musical form of worksand ultimately leading to the change of practical play."Rhapsody" genre refers to that the speaker recitesthe epic with emotions without the accompaniment of musical instruments. The name of "Rhapsody"originated from the earliest Greek (rhapsoidia), meaning "epic". Tomá ek is the founder of the "Rhapsody"genre. This article starts from its source to interpret of history of the "Rhapsody" genre.In the thesis, the development, innovation, research and analysis of "Rhapsody" genre will beelaborated in three parts. The first part tends to describe the "Rhapsody" genre and interpret the reasons forits formation and writing style from the perspective of its social causes and cultural background.Furthermore, the "Rhapsody" genre will be discussed from these two aspects: Piano "Rhapsody" and the"Rhapsody" genre of other instruments. The second part is about the art features of "Rhapsody" genre,discussing how the "Rhapsody" genre emerged, developed and innovated by listing some representativesworks of composers from the Romantic period, European nation-School of Music in the19th century,French Impressionist in20th century and the period after that, such as the Spanish "Rhapsody " ofBrahms and linen Ferrie, Debussy's Première Rhapsodie For Clarinet, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue", andXian Xinghai's "Chinese Rhapsody". The third part is the theme of the paper, discussing the inheritance,development and innovation of "Rhapsody" genre in three aspects:1.Researching the works of Tomáek andits students to illustrate the formation of the "Rhapsody" genre and understand the early development of the"Rhapsody" genre.2. As the main point of this part, this aspect will elaborate Liszt's contribution to theinheritance, development and innovation of Rhapsody genre. An detailed examination will be given to"Hungarian Rhapsody" by analyzing the system of scale and mode, the variation technique and musicalstructure. Meanwhile, its own national identity will be studied.3. Studying some of the "Rhapsody" worksof modern composers to interpret the heritage and innovation from the perspective of the history of music.
