A Study Of The Relationship Between Students'Personality And The Use Of Oral English Learning Strategies

In the past few decades, researchers have done many studies on language strategy. They found there are many factors affecting language learning strategies'use, such as motivation, personality and language strategy, etc, especially personality. In China, researchers have begun studying in this field. But, they hardly pay more attention to the relation between language strategy and personality and most researchers ignored every aspects of language learning. Therefore, the present study mainly studies the relationship between personality types and oral English.The author selected147junior non-English majors from Shaanxi Normal University. Firstly, the researcher made a survey on the subjects'personality through personality questionnaire and interview and found32extroverts and29introverts. Secondly, the researcher investigated the situation of the use of language strategy by using the strategy questionnaire designed based on the Oxford's (1990) classification scheme. But the present strategy questionnaire is different from the Oxford's classification scheme; the researcher divided the cognitive strategies into two strategies, functional practice strategy and formal practice strategy. Finally, the author used SPSS16.0to analyze the obtained data. After data analysis, the researcher found the extroverts'use of overall strategies is not different from the introverts'use of the overall strategies. But in individual strategies, there are significant differences in the use of compensation strategy, memory strategies and social strategies between the extroverts and the introverts. Of course, depending on the result of the data analysis, the author put forward some implications for oral English teaching and learning.
