| The notion of the translator's role and position is ever changing. Translation studies used to center on the source text, and later its focus converted to the readership. Currently the translator becomes the top issue in this domain. After the "cultural turn" in1970s, the role of the translator being the subject of translating activity is highlighted. Successful display of the translator's subjectivity may result in successful translation, Zhang Zhenyu's Chinese version of Moment in Peking being one of the examples.Lin Yutang's English novel Moment in Peking arouses people's wide attention home and abroad. Former studies on it are mainly from such perspectives as language and style, cultural transmission, and translation strategy. Starting from the translator's subjectivity, this thesis attempts to find out the reason why Zhang Zhenyu's Chinese version is the most popular among all translated versions. The source text depicts Chinese story in English. Through the whole translation, one can find that the translator's subjectivity exists everywhere in the selection of text, translation strategy, narrative style, language processing, cultural reconstruction and translational standpoint. The manifestation of the translator's subjectivity results from the exertion of the subject's initiative, which is affected and restricted by intrinsic and extrinsic factors at the same time. Under the general influence of the source text author, the target language reader, social ideology and poetics, the translator's subjectivity still manifests in the translation.Examples are taken from Moment in Peking and its Chinese versions to exemplify the necessity and rationality of the existence of the translator's subjectivity in this thesis. It hopes to offer some new ideas to help further recognize the position of the translator and study on the translator's subjectivity, and appraise the creative treason of the translator in a more objective way. |
