"Chang'an Painting School" was one of the important school of painting in the20th century Chinese art history. It is one of the Chinese painting genre, the initiation and growth of which was in northwest in earlier New China. It was founded by Wangyun Zhao and Lu Shi under the influence of the new ideology and literary. The creative purpose and artistic pursuit of "Chang'an Painting School" is that "one hand for tradition, one hand for stretching the life", with a distinctive character and a strong regional style. The painting styles of the studies are mostly concentrated on the landscape and figure painting, but little on bird-and-flower painting. It is necessary to study on the bird-and-flower painting of Chang'an School of Painting for the supplement of the weaknesses of the "Chang'an Painting School ".The bird-and-flower painting is one of important parts of the artistic creation of "Chang'an Painting School", the backbones of which are the painter namely Lu Shi, Jizhong Fang, Haixia He and Shiyao Kang. Under the creative idea of "one hand for tradition, one hand for stretching the life", they have opened up a new situation of the contemporary bird-and-flower painting with the regional character of Shanxi region. The contemporary bird-and-flower painters are affected by them. In this paper, the character of bird-and-flower painting of Chang'an Painting School, the formation of the artistic style, the affection and revelation to the contemporary bird-and-flower painting are discussed through the literature, the image analysis and comparative approach based on the previous studies. There are four parts in this paper. Firstly, the development of inoculation and exploration, maturation and improvement, innovation and flourish is discussed over time. Secondly, the natural life-freehand-brushwork creative idea from, the vigorously broad-minded seiitsu aesthetic demands, the poetic and situational implications of realm, the vivid calligraphic expression, and the "wild, strange, chaotic, black" aesthetic ideas are also discussed. The painters are not confined to the traditional bird-and-flower painting, and also deep into the lives depicted in a lot of local life of paintings showing the innovative spirit of the loom, with the art of realm namely "No tricks to tricks". The study of the paintings of Lu Shi, Jizhong Fang, Haixia He, Shiyao Kang based on brushwork is also done to give readers a better understanding of the ink connotation of the bird-and-flower paintings from "Chang'an Painting School". Thirdly, the reasons of the formation of its artistic style is explored through regional humanities, the style of the times, psychological character and the sister art. And the affection to the contemporary bird-and-flower is also discussed. Focus on theoretical research, tradition, the "Chang'an Painting School" maintained to "Art comes from life", for this, the paintings of which are timely and national. These excellent qualities are the things which could be learned by contemporary painters. All of these are theoretic and real for the development of bird-and-flower painting.
