Improving students' scientific literacy is the basic goal of modern science education. Understanding the nature of science (NOS) is not only a centric element for scientific literacy, but also has been the important target of science education. In the theory part of this paper, we conduct a research on the development of atomic structure, summarizing the views of NOS in it, and we also design the teaching program.Views of NOS questionnaire has been established in the practical part of this paper. 371 senior high school students' understanding of the views of NOS is investigated in Xuchang. The study get some conclusions as follows:the high school students have a good understanding of the Empirical NOS, the Tentative NOS, and the diversity in scientific method; have a general understanding of the Creative NOS; but they are ignorant of the Theory-laden NOS and know little about the distinction between scientific theories and laws. There are significant differences between boys and girls in understanding the Empirical NOS and the Theory-laden NOS; the senior high school students in grade 3 know four views of NOS more clearly than the students in grade 2, which are the Tentative NOS, the Theory-laden NOS, the diversity in scientific method, the distinction between scientific theories and laws; the students major in science have a better understanding of the views of NOS than the students major in arts.We also implement a teaching intervention, investigating students'different understanding of the views of NOS after learning the history of atomic structure. The following conclusions are reached:scientists' experiments can help students understand the Empirical NOS; the development of the atomic structure can help students understand the Tentative NOS; the debate of cathode-ray experiment has an active role in helping students understand the Theory-laden NOS; the facts that Rutherford proposes the nuclear planetary model can help students understand the Creative NOS; the analogy, hypothesis, and other methods can help students understand the diversity in scientific method. Finally, some teaching strategies are put forward in orde to help students understand the views of NOS deeply, such as reproducing the process of scientific development; organizing IHV activities and using the animation.
