With the reform of the language teaching methods, the new curriculum standard put forward that English curriculum should develop students'cultural consciousness. So the teachers should emphasize on teaching background knowledge of culture and create English studying environment. English studying is influenced by language ability, reading strategy, learning motivation and mother tongue language migration, etc. Among them, background knowledge of culture influences the English learning most. In order to foster the students'emotional attitude and produce more motivation and interests, the new English curriculum standard requires emotional attitude besides grasping language knowledge. If the teachers can foster the students'active emotional attitude and language learning, English teaching will go on smoothly and the students'learning ability will be improved.In the paper, the writer analyzes the English textbooks and does a survey of how much the English teachers teach background knowledge of culture in class, then did a research of the importance of background knowledge in language learning. Besides, the writer bases her argument on Krashen's second language acquisition theory, especially the relationship between background knowledge and language acquisition and the students'interests and motivation. The writer makes junior students as respondents. The writer, by using the methods of questionnaires and teacher-student interviews, does a survey on how much the junior students know the cultural background knowledge, and the influence of background knowledge on students'language acquisition. And then the writer analyzes the degree of the influence and its reason according to the survey data. At last according to her own analysis, the writer puts forward some strategies from textbook contents, exam forms, teachers'strategies and teaching activities. It is hoped that this survey can be helpful to other teachers'research.
