China s Educational Reform and Development Outline clearly points out that "secondary and primary schools should be converted to the track of an overall improvement of the national quality from the exam-oriented education" and "managed with their own features." The guideline of basic education specifies the schooling aim in education. To run the school with its own features has become the inevitable tendency of the reform and development of the secondary and primary schools.At present, the academia has done some research into the theory of running a school with individual features and many schools also have carried out some helpful experiments, but it is quite necessary to study the school-running features of Yueyang No.14 High School, a well-known key school in the north of Hunan Province, due to the changes of the relationship of administrative subordination and the schooling environment.The study is done by summarizing experiments, looking into some cases and studying documents. Through the research, the paper thoroughly analyses the theory of running a school with individual features-"rigorous and pragmatic", seeks the important reasons for forming the features, understands the history of the school, the idea of the school, the thoughts of the school, the great achievements of the school and the challenges that the school is facing in the new situation. The features mainly include the "rigorous and pragmatic" educational idea, the "rigorous and pragmatic" school management, "rigorous and pragmatic" teaching thoughts and "rigorous and pragmatic" moral education and distinct art and P.E. features. The main reasons for the formation of the unique features are the profound and lasting influence of the corporate culture, characteristic management of the principals, rigorous scholarship of the teachers and the cultivation of the education and research based on the school itself. The paper also explores how a school keeps the feature and continues to develop it in the new historical condition.
