Affect refers to a social mental mechanism related with human needs, which is a kind of attitudinal experience that is produced by whether the object conforms to its needs. When the objective things conform to people's subjective needs, the person may have positive affective experience and vice versa. Arnold, a leading authority on linguistics, he thinks the affective factors about language learning or teaching refer to learners'emotions, feelings, moods, attitudes etc.during their learning process. For many affective factors of language teaching, Arnold put them into two categories:the first type is learners'individual factors, including anxiety, inhibition, character, learning motivation and attitude, self-esteem etc. And the second type is affective factors between the instruction subjects (teacher&learners), including empathy, classroom transaction etc.According to certain research, Lindgren concluded that affective factors are the key elements determining the success or failure of students'learning. If the functions of emotion perform well, they will start learners'learning aptitudes, mobilise their learning enthusiasm. At the same time they also can release students'learning potential and solve the psychological problems which students come across in the process of study. At present, the state attaching importance to cognitive learning but ignoring affective cultivation exists widely in English teaching of senior high school. And the specific performances are:focusing on cognitive knowledge imparting and neglects the communication of affective information. In English class, teachers are so utilitarian to pursue the teaching effect that students'subjective status is often ignored by them. Learning in such kind of situation for a long time, students are becoming more and more passive, they get used to being cramed by their teachers and losing their initiatives of language learning step by step. So it's hard to set up their confidence in language learning. But how to raise students'positive emotion and make them study initiatively in high school English class has become a hot topic recently, and many scholars researching in education are thinking about this question. As the research purpose of this thesis is trying to put certain pragmatics theory that is politeness principles into guiding the high school English teaching, hoping that it will help teachers trigger and keep students' interest of learning language successfully. At the same time, the effective use of polite language and politeness strategies in English class by teacher, can further consolidate students'subjective status during the teaching process which can fully arouse students' learning initiative and enthusiasm, thereby their self-confidence of learning English can be enhanced as well. All in all, it can achieve the positive affective cultivation effect.The paper includes five parts:The first half of this thesis tells us the definition of affect and the classifications of the classroom emotional factors. It analyses the basic theory of affective cultivation and its research status as well. Then it describes the meaning and development history of politeness principle, and it also presents the actuality of using PP in English teaching. This article starts from addressing the communicative characteristics of PP and English class, then discusses the feasibilities of applying PP in English classroom teaching and it also shows some examples of using PP in classroom teaching process respectively. It analyzes the guiding role of PP when using in classroom teaching in detail and thereby probes the significance of applying PP in cultivating students'positive affection in English classroom teaching. And the second half of the thesis dissertates the empirical research of applying PP in English classroom teaching of high school. Ultimately, it achieves the result that the observance of PP has a promoted function to English classroom teaching in senior high school. The application of PP can further consolidate students'subjective status during the teaching process. And subsequently it get the goal to cultivate the students'positive emotion of learning by creating more favorable atmosphere for study.
