More and more intelligent devices with graphic user interface have appeared now, and this makes demands of remote controlling to these devices increased. Most imbedded systems have relatively low-performance CPU, little RAM and storage, and uses light-weight GUI system such as MiniGUI. As a result, a light-weight implementation of remote desktop service would be welcomed. This thesis implements a light-weight VNC server based on Linux framebuffer and Linux input system, with ARM-based SOC as its hardware platform and imbedded Linux as software environment. Since most imbedded GUI systems are based on framebuffer mechanism, our VNC server would be able to run at most Linux systems, as long as on which framebuffer is supported. Moreover, we also provide audio support in our VNC server, to meet needs of many applications. The VNC server implemented in this thesis has good performance, well portability and consumes little storage. All of these make it a usable application. This thesis first introduces common remote desktop technologies; then gives the overall architecture of the software system based on our specific requirements; then gives detail description of each module; and at last tests the implementation. The test result shows that our implementation has excellent performance on imbedded Linux environment, which makes it fully qualified for most applications.
