In 2001, China joined the World Trade Organization and a large number of foreign capitals came into the auto industry of China. It makes our auto companies obtain the learning opportunities and face great challenges as well to close observe international auto giants'operations and compete with them at the same stage. Considering the fact that there are a large number of recalls in recent years and some of the product quality defects have been hidden down since its development and design process on a large extent, many developed countries shift the emphases of quality management from product manufacturing to product development and design process. The product quality defects may be hidden in every corner in its development process, if we do not re-think, re-design the entire process, it will be difficult to discover the problem. Therefore, in this context, BPR in product development seems obviously important.This paper studies the application of BPR in Tianjin FAW XIALI Automobile Co., Ltd. and does a lot of analysis and argumentation for Practical problems in TFC's product development and design process, and ultimately a reasonable improvement has been proposed. In the course of the study, this paper first analyzes the background of BPR, a brief comparison on BPR's development of our and foreign countries has been made. Then it describes the theoretical framework of BPR, including its concepts, process and methods. In this paper, we mainly utilize IDEF models and ASME method to analyze and reconstruct the product development process. Finally, we apply the theoretical framework of BPR to the product development process of the case company, lay special stress on analyzing the product development before BPR, diagnosing and identifying the unreasonable aspects in original process, and making a feasibility analysis based on actual conditions. On this basis, the whole picture of BPR as well as the practical reengineering proposal has been provided, which can lead them to improve the problems and enhance their core competitiveness and economic benefits.In this paper, by means of BPR, we redesigned the product development processes of TFC. It is not only beneficial for the company to improve the practical problems, but also plays a significant role to support TFC's product strategy, which shows a strong practical meaning.
