China's long-standing custom of providing for the aged, the thesis is the deep investigation practices by a small range of old-age in this village, anthropology as the theoretical perspective of old age, from a new angle to the culture of dialysis meaning behind life.In this paper, the Chinese culture of filial piety as the starting point to explore the important influence of culture of filial piety in the Chinese family's providing for the aged, and analyses the reason of the culture of filial piety is the internal driving force for family's providing for the aged. By interviewing the part of the elderly and the household survey in Fanye village, the existing concept of providing for the aged in the region, the form of custom of providing for the aged, continuity of the custom, and changes of the status of the elderly can be understood in the paper.This paper described the custom of providing for the aged, the elderly in Fanye village of Xinzhou in Shanxi as the object of the field work, combining the status of the elderly in the family, the relationships between the elderly and the second generation,third generation; then it analyzed the contemporary problems of custom of providing for old-age in rural area Firstly the reason of the paper's topic,the researching method,the background and profile of this community were introduced (in the first, second chapter);combined the local definition to the elderly and the legal definition the paper defined the object of this study (in Chapterâ…¢). And then it transferred to the discussions of "filial piety", combined with the Chinese traditional "support" and "filial piety" concept, the focus on the sketch of filial piety in Fanye village, in Fanye village old-age's position of life, as well as their views of providing for the older people (Chapter IV); with the customs of separation of the family as the start, it explained the behavior patterns of this custom in Fanye village (chapter V), including the two life ceremonies relating to the older people:longevity and funeral. Finally, the paper recollected contemporary custom of providing for the old-age in rural area, the changes of providing way that have occurred, and a great impact on the providing practices changes in family patterns had. Finally, it interrogated how to solve the problem of providing for the contemporary rural old-age, namely, it needs the intervention of state's power, the co-participation of individual family and community (Conclusion).Including:The third chapter on definition of the concept "the elderly", combining the literature of ancient China with international standards as defined in the elderly, and contrasting this local definition of "elderly" in Fanye village, this study identified the object.With the Chinese tradition of filial piety as the starting point, the fourth chapter analyzed deeply the concept of filial piety in Fanye village and the cultural significance behind filial piety, combined with the relationship between the elderly and child generation and grandchildren, laid out status changes of the elderly in their daily lives;v Beginning with the custom of separation, Chapter five showed the whole picture of the custom of proving for old-age in Fanye village. It completed the analysis of sub-division of providing obligations determined by the separation property of the ceremony; It described the two kinds of maintenance modes, and the impact on the concept of fertility that the changes of maintenance mode had; At last, It introduced two important ceremonies:birthday party and nail in the coffin, and children's the role and obligations in the two ceremonies.Finally, with the combination of Chinese traditional culture of filial piety and filial piety in Fanye village, starting from the changes of family patterns and maintenance modes, the conclusion indicted that the solution to providing problems for the old-age which need the intervention of state's power, but more efforts from the tripartite personal, community, national together in contemporary rural area of China.
