Research On The Relations Between China's Environment & Economic Growth And Their KUZNETS Curve's Feature

Since Reformation and Opening up over 30 years ago, China has made great achievements in economic and social development. Just as the continued rapid and steady economic growth, the environmental pollution and ecological destruction have become more serious. These problems have restricted the sustained and stable development of national economy. This thesis studies the effect of economic growth on environmental quality in each area of China based on the Environment Kuznets Theory, which can help to clear the relations between economy and environment and make common progress in the two of them. We believe it will also help to put forward the Strategic objectives"to build a harmonious socialist society in China"into practice. Therefore, this study on the inspection and analysis of Chinese environmental Kuznets curve has important significance, not only in theory but in practice.The paper consists of six chapters. In the first chapter, research background and meaning of the selected topics are shown and different opinions and study methods of western and eastern economics are reviewed. The second part defines concepts such as environmental issues, economic growth and makes a theory review, including External economy theory, property theorem, public goods theory and environmental Kuznets theory.The subject part includes three parts as follows: The third part is an analysis on the economic and environmental current condition of China, which is described with large amounts of data and graph. The fourth chapter is an empirical analysis of the effect of economic growth on environmental quality. During this part, using panel unit root and panel co-integration, the thesis researches China's Regression equation of its economy and environment. The conclusion is that from 2000 to 2008, China's industrial smoke dust emission first ascended and then descended with the economic growth. So is the environmental pollution degree.The fifth part analyzes the district characteristics and differences between China's eastern, middle and western region. From the results of study we know that, in Eastern China, industrial smoke dust emission first ascends and then descends with the income per head, which appears remarkable upside-down-N-shaped curves in Eastern China. And, the oxygen demand of middle region presents marked N-shaped curves. The characteristics of other indexes are not very clear.The final chapter is countermeasure and suggestion. In this part, the conclusion of the research before is summarized and suggestions are surposed to harmony environmental protection and economic development and improve environmental quality in our country.
