Geological work is closely related to the development of society and the country.As an important information source and results of geological works, geological map isthe combination of research results of the geological theory and understanding of thegeological knowledge.The legend is the expression of the basic form and method of map content. Forthe geological map, legend is an important part of the transmission of geologicalinformation, to explain and illustrate the symbols on the map. Geological map as oneof the important results of geological work, its function largely depends on the overallfunction of the symbols.As a result of the complexity of a variety of geological phenomenon andgeological symbols, it is very difficult for geological map establishment. Map used bytraditional geological studies all need to manually prepared, hand-painted clear. Thedevelopment of modern computer technology and geographic information systemsimprove the design of the geologic map symbols and legends as well as thepreparation of geological maps greatly. However, there are still a lot of inconvenience,such as high error rate、low accuracy、time consuming、low degree of standardizationand automation. Therefore, in order to complete the accurate transmission andreception of the geological information, the standardization and automation of thelegend is very important.In summary, based on the quantitative research on the legend of geological map,the central content of this article are as follows:First, classify different geologic legend based on the geological description,analysis of the role and influence of colors, symbols and annotations of the legendaccording to the composition content of legend in detail.Second, to realize the standardization of legend, on the basis of the nationalregional geological mapping symbols and geological industry standard specifications,this paper do research from colors, symbols and annotations respectively, proposequantitative methods and expanded principles one by one, realize the standardization of legend.Third, for the complexity of the rock pattern structure and composition, thispaper purposed a method to recovery and quantification of the rock pattern symbolsaccording to the raster coding theory in GIS. This method is based on the TrueTypefont technology, recording the rock pattern structure through the theory which is run–length coding, realize the restoration and reconstruction of the rock pattern symbols,and the unlimited expansion.Forth, established the classify mechanism of stratum and annotations database,proposed a method to achieve the automation of the sort of legend, based on theannotations.At last, the technical methods and results in this paper are applied to the subjectwhich is―Marine standardized digital mapping system‖, realized the standardizationand automation of the legend.
