Twenty-first Century is called "Ocean Century", ocean engineering construction of the increasing scale is more and more, underwater welding is used more and more frequently. Traditional underwater welding is constrained by many factors, so the underwater welding automation raised pressing requirement. Research will realize underwater welding ultrasonic welding seam tracking for target, be going to research on the ultrasonic ranging system, signal acquisition and analysis, and the control system.Ultrasonic sensor seam tracking difficulty lies in the ability to distinguish the location of the weld in underwater welding. Through the ultrasonic ranging theory, design ultrasonic ranging system, range source determining weld in welding location with the discrimination in welding seam range source a position, and finally achieve the underwater welding automatic tracking.The welding process exists in underwater welding arc, bubble disturbance, water and dust and impurities distance unfavorable factors, make the ultrasonic signal exit noise. In the distance, it is determining the echo signal before, need to signal filtering and others processing, By the correlation coefficient method, the acquisition of the signal can be related to the signal processing, increases in front of the echo signal recognition accuracy and precision.This paper’s hardware system has three main parts,including signal acquisition system,welding subsystem and motion control subsystem of three main parts. Experiments show that,their movement stability to meet the requirements of the system.It is used VISUALC++6.0as a development tool, based on multitasking operating system designed a set of interface with complete functions of the application software. It is analyzing and processing for signal by Matlab,.The paper finally underwater for ultrasonic ranging validated by experiment, analyzing ultrasonic sensor motion state, and for underwater welding process to provide accurate seam tracking foundation, has the high tracking reliability, the result is accurate.
