Blue-coke was prepared by the low metamorphic coals by the low temperature drydistillation. And powders appear resulting from production, transportation and storageof blue-coke with high fixed carbon content, low ash and low volatile. The process andmethod for producing activated carbon using blue-coke powder was studied in thispaper and the performance of products were characterized. And develop a new road forthe comprehensive utilization of blue-coke powder. The study shows that, blue-coke powder after pretreatment three times was mixedwith20%binder then modeled. Activated carbon was prepared by physical activationmethod under the conditions: carbonization temperature was450℃, activationtemperature was900℃, activation time was1.5h, the amount of water vapor was50mL/h. And the yield of products was34.15%, the compressive strength was9.9MPa,the iodine adsorption value was1157.4mg/g and the specific surface-area was448.70m~2/g. While the physical-chemical activation method were used to prepareactivated carbon under the same conditions. The yield of products was45.62%, thecompressive strength was14.5MPa, the iodine adsorption value was1145.8mg/g andthe specific surface-area was488.75m~2/g.X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the graphitization degree, the irregular degreeof its microcrystalline structure and the amorphous carbon content of the productsprepared by physical activation method are higher than the products prepared byphysical-chemical activation method. The data of pore size distribution shows that theaverage pore size of the products prepared by the two methods is in the middle of thepore size, it belongs to pore developed activated carbon, but the average pore size of theproducts made by physical-chemical activation is much smaller than the ones made by physical activation. FTIR spectra revealed that the activated carbon prepared by the twomethods contains a lot of hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups which couldinfluence the sorption capacities. But the free hydroxyl of the activated carbon whichprepared by the physical-chemical activation is decreased and the unsaturated functionalgroups are increased in surface functional groups.
