Laser cladding has been widely used in some fields, such as automobile, metallurgy, and national defense industry, etc. However, because laser energy transition and physical processes of laser cladding are notably complex, as well as, the cladding quality is affected by various factors, merely adjusting cladding parameters to guarantee the quality is not sufficient. Thus, it is laser cladding quality real-time monitoring that serves to be vital to obtain high-quality deep penetration clad, to exert laser cladding’s features of high speed and efficiency and do accelerate its industrial application process. Also, the essence of laser cladding process can be better understood by the research.In this paper, it is introduced that a system can be used in monitor the melt pool by applying CCD(Charge Coupled Device) camera, frame grabber and the digital image processing technology.The melt pool images are processed by the use of the software, which was developed on the Visual C++, image processing makes the gray value distribution displayed clearly through segmenting the image threshold.The geometry and temperature field distribution of laser molten pool are measured, which can accurately reveal some changes in the process of laser cladding, The melt pool image detecting system can effectually detect the width of cladding by contrasting the data of detecting with the data of experiment, the parameters of the molten pool can reflect the quality of cladding. The effects of technological parameter, such as power, scan speed and powder speed, on the molten pool characteristics are obtained based on some results from the experiments.Through the experiment and the molten pool’s images, the defects are researched on the surface of laser cladding layer. including the molten pool’s geometry, gray value, etc. The paper proposes a method of deviation recognition and the laser cladding layer trend, the presented system is useful for improving the cladding layer quality.
