The melted metal die forging has been developing rapidly in recent years because of its advantages. Melted metal die forging process was used more in the field of metallic materials with high melting point than before, while the low life of the mold became a limiting element to the development of the melted metal die forging, and the price of the mold is an important part of the total cost. Throughout the process of the melted metal die forging, the die suffers cyclic load of high temperature and pressure, which is the root cause of the die failure. This study connects the experimental measurement with the theoretical simulations to analyze the thermal behavior of the die.A mold for experiment has been designed and produced in a factory. The designs of mold include determining the technical parameters, the die parameters, the operation parameters, the mold structure and so on. With the mold, there are three kinds of cooling system for analysis which include thick wall, thin wall and gyroidal cooling system. After calculating the heat transfer coefficient of each cooling system, the relationship between the flow of cooling water and the heat transfer coefficient was determined.Aluminum alloy and45#steel was selected as the melted metals to do the melted metal die forging experiment, and the experimental data was analyzed by statistics. The numerical simulation was conducted on both filling and solidification processes with finite element simulation software, then the temperature field was researched. Finally, the law of the mold thermal behavior was obtained by comparing the theoretical data with the experimental data. The above analysis results showed that the temperature of the position, within a certain area close to the melted metal, began with a sharp rising and then decreased slowly. The area of mold, which suffers high temperature and pressure, is the corner close to the melted metal. As to the melted copper alloy die forging and the melted steel die forging, the temperature of mold’s key position may rise to550℃, which is the operating temperature limit for the mold. And it was found that the cooling effect of gyroidal cooling system is better than the other two, while intense cooling effect may lead to worse filling and molding quality. Under actual production conditions, the key position of the mold should be coated with a coating seriously, or set a local cooling system to increase the life of the mold.
