The ecosystem is not only the material basis for survival of human society, but also plays an important role to maintain the material circulation and energy flow in the biosphere. However, with the acceleration of the rapid economic growth and modernization, human impact on ecological environment is arising, which results in a series of serious environmental problems and the ecosystem has been seriously damaged. Therefore, research on ecosystem health is essential.Environment-economic-social as a large system and on the base of the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) conceptual model, the paper builded the index system structure, selected11indicators from both natural and human, and identified three levels of indicators system; and builded the indicators factor mathematical model; the application of RS and GIS technology completed technical realization of these models; Shanxi Province as the study, a systematic study of ecosystem health were carried out, the main research results are:(1) Index system:"Pressure-state-response" model as the framework of the model, we selected a representative, comprehensive index factor, to the ecosystem health as objectives layer; to pressure, state, response as criteria layer; to disturbance degree of the population, population density, land reclamation, transportation network density, biodiversity, ecological flexibility index, average precipitation, air pollution index, water density, per capita GDP and grass coverage as index level layer, then established a complete index system.(2) Index weights:The paper use the analytic hierarchy process to establish the hierarchical structure model for index system and establish judgment matrix followed by the target layer-criteria layer-index layer, which calculated layers index factor on the right of the layer index factor weight.(3) Index model:The paper use an integrated stack approach to model the ecosystem health. Followed by the target layer-criteria layer-index layer, we established mathematical model in which for disturbance degree of the population, population density, land reclamation, transportation network density, biodiversity, average precipitation, water density and grass coverage we established based on network grid cell, these models can more accurately reflect the natural distribution characteristics of the evaluation; while for ecological flexibility index, air pollution index and per capita GDP we established model based on Administrative Region (SAR) instead of the evaluation unit to the grid index factor.(4) Technical methods:The introduction of the Remote sensing technology (RS) and Geographic information technology(GIS) provided technical support for ecosystem health. RS techniques were analyzed to extract information on the ecological environment, ecosystem class; density and spatial analysis technology of GIS were applicated to realise model spatial analysis and calculation and acquire the outcome of the corresponding indicators in the spatial distribution.(5) Regional Study:Taking Shanxi Province as the research object, using the established index system and technological methods makes its ecosystem health assessment, evaluation results are consistent with the actual local situation, indicating that the method is reasonable and feasible; and then the evaluation results were analyzed, which provides a theoretical basis for ecological and environmental protection in Shanxi Province.
