In current work, functional polymer chains have been attached onto the surface ofactivated carbon (AC) and SiO2by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization(SI-ATRP). The adsorption perperties of obtained inorganic/organic hybrid functionalmaterials were investigated. The details are as follows:(1) Modification of AC by activators generated by electron transfer (AGET) ATRP.In this work, AC was pretreated by oxidation to get surface-oxygen functional groups(OFG) rich AC, which was then treated with2-bromo isobutyryl bromide (BiBB) to fixATRP initiator on the surface of AC. The polymerization behavior was investigated indetail by choosing MMA as the monomer. Copper bromide (CuBr2),pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA), vitamin C (Vc) and dimethylformamide(DMF) were selected as the catalyst, ligand, reducing agent and solvent respectively.Subsequently, inorganic/organic hybrid materials bearing well controlled polymer chainson the surface were obtained. The polymer structure on the surface was confirmed by FT-IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS). The amounts of initiator and polymer onthe surface were calculated by thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). Besides, tert-butylacrylate (t-BA) was also taken as monomer to perform AGET ATRP on the surface of AC,then polyacrylic acid (PAA) graft AC (AC@PAA) was obtained after hydrolysis ofpoly(tert-butyl acrylate)(P(t-BA)). Interestingly, the sorption capabilities of the copperions by AC@PAA were larger than AC and can be adjusted by varying chain lengths ofgrafted PAA, giving these materials potential application in waste water treatment.(2) CO2adsorbent prepared by modification of commercial silica gel. Two syntheticroutes are designed to fix PEI, an excellent CO2enriching agent, on the surface of silica gelby covalent bond. In the first case,3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane was employed to beimmobilized on the surface of silica gel to form Epoxy-activated Silica Gel (ESG), whichwas then treated with polyethylenediamine (PEI), accordingly silica gel bearing PEI wasobtained. In the second case, amine groups were first anchored on the surface of silica gel, then treated with BiBB to generate macroinitiator. Afterwards, functional monomerbearing epoxy group (GMA) was chosen to execute polymerization to form well controlledPGMA on the surface of silica providing active points to react with PEI. The obtainedmaterials in different levels were characterized by FT-IR and TGA. Finally the materialsused as CO2adsorbents were investigated.
